This coverage pays a weekly benefit (after a set elimination period) if you are disabled or unable to work due to an injury, illness, or pregnancy. If you elect the STD coverage, you will only have coverage for the first 11 weeks of a disability. In order to have coverage beyond the 11 weeks, you will need to elect the LTD also.
